Free games on Steam: check what the offer actually includes

An earlier version of this article promised four free Steam games without identifying them or establishing the terms of each offer. That recommendation was not usable, and the claim is withdrawn. A free download can mean several different things; the label and conditions on the game's actual store page matter more than a headline about games to keep forever.

Distinguish ongoing access from a temporary event

Steam describes free-to-play games as playable without a purchase or subscription, with optional in-game spending where supported. A Free Weekend instead gives temporary access to a paid game. Steam's documentation says the game can remain listed in the library afterwards even though continued play requires purchase. A library entry alone is therefore not proof of permanent access.

Read the offer before starting the download

Check whether the button refers to the full game, a demo or a timed event, and read any displayed end time. Consider download size and the time you have to try it before an event closes. If an offer claims permanent access, look for that condition explicitly rather than assuming it from the word free. Keep the confirmation associated with your account, and avoid sharing login details with a third-party promotion page.
