Factorio 2.1: what changed and how to protect your factory

Factorio 2.1 is available, not an undated future update

Wube announced the public experimental release in June 2026. Its earlier plan describes 2.1 as the intended last major update, with long-term support continuing. That is a development plan, not a promise that every future change has ended. Check the current version and release notes in your installation before following instructions written for an earlier build.

Before updating a factory you care about

The important buying or playing decision is not whether 2.1 makes Factorio permanently finished. It is whether your particular save and mod setup are ready to move.

1. Keep a separate copy of the save and blueprint library before opening them in a newer version.
2. Write down the game version and the names and versions of enabled mods. A screenshot of that list gives you a useful troubleshooting reference.
3. Read each essential mod’s compatibility notes. Test a copy of the factory before moving the only working save.
4. After loading, inspect the systems your factory depends on: power, recipes, train routes and production bottlenecks. Do not assume a successful load proves every design still behaves identically.

Wube specifically warned that 2.0 saves can load in 2.1 while factory designs may break, and that upgraded saves and blueprints cannot be downgraded to 2.0. A backup is therefore a recovery option, not busywork.

Should you start now or keep your existing version?

For a new factory, choose the branch and mod collection you intend to use together. For a long-running modded project, keeping a working setup while checking compatibility is a reasonable choice. Neither decision requires buying another copy merely because a patch number changed.

When comparing the listed Factorio offer, check its platform, delivered format and included content. Do not treat a reference to the 2.1 update as proof that the separate Space Age expansion is included. The offer’s actual contents decide that.
