Real-time combat RPGs: choose the combat loop, not a ranking

Real-time does not describe the whole game

A real-time RPG asks you to act during combat rather than wait for a turn, but that label alone does not explain the experience. Cover shooting, melee positioning and character-building choices can produce very different games. This replaces our broad ten-game ranking with a focused decision guide; it does not claim a comparative playtest or measured popularity.

Two different starting points

EA presents Mass Effect 3 as an action-shooter experience with cover, weapons and powers. Bandai Namco presents Elden Ring as a fantasy action RPG. Use that difference to start your shortlist: do you want a science-fiction shooting framework, or a fantasy action framework?

The useful next step is to watch a complete ordinary encounter from the exact game and edition, not only a cinematic trailer. Notice what the player repeatedly does: aiming from cover, moving around an enemy, choosing equipment or managing resources. Ask whether you want to repeat that loop over a longer campaign.

Compare like-for-like editions

The listed Mass Effect 3 offer should be assessed by its own included content. Do not transfer a feature or entitlement from Legendary Edition, another store’s bundle or a separate DLC simply because the game name appears in all of them.
