A save conflict is not a prompt to choose a version randomly. Stop playing and identify the device holding the progress you want. Synchronisation may replace one copy with another; it is not a historical backup that guarantees recovery of every earlier version.
Separate ownership from saved progress
Record the account, game, edition, last device used and last objective completed. An installed, activated game may still open an old save or another profile. Before reinstalling or buying another key, identify whether the missing element is the licence, installed files or progress. These are separate problems with different solutions.
Respond carefully to a Steam Cloud conflict
- Close the game on the involved devices instead of testing a new playthrough.
- Identify the computer or device where the wanted progress last appeared.
- Use the game’s official help to locate saves and copy them to a separate backup folder before replacing anything.
- Compare Steam’s timestamps with your actual last session; a timestamp alone does not prove which content you want.
- Choose the appropriate sync copy only when you know it is correct. Otherwise stop and consult the game’s support.
- After synchronising, verify the character or save on one device before continuing elsewhere.
Check what the game synchronises
Steam Cloud support and the files included are game-specific. In the Steam Library, inspect Properties > General for the title’s cloud setting. Cross-operating-system save compatibility is not universal. Investigate a sync error before launching and creating more divergent progress.
Situations requiring extra caution
- Both devices were used offline and have different progress.
- None of the dates or profiles looks familiar.
- A save may belong to another edition or account.
- A tutorial tells you to delete all saves without first identifying and protecting the right files.
Check Xbox synchronisation without deleting data
Connected Xbox consoles synchronise saves through the Xbox network; that cloud storage does not require a paid subscription. Use the same profile on the other console and let synchronisation finish. For its status, highlight the game, use Menu to open its Game card and inspect the sync information beside its artwork.
Before leaving a console or switching computers
Exit the game normally and keep a stable connection while syncing. If your latest session was offline, do not assume another device has that progress. Record a persistent error and use the corresponding Xbox troubleshooting guidance rather than deleting account data. A rushed reset can remove the evidence needed to find the correct copy.
Steam Cloud and Xbox saves are separate systems. Seeing the same title in two stores does not establish shared progress; check whether the publisher supports that exact route. Keep important manual copies outside the synchronised location, and do not publish saves on an open forum. Account details or personal identifiers may be embedded in files whose names look harmless.

Frequently asked questions
Should I always choose the latest timestamp?
No. Compare the device, account and progress you actually want as well.
Does Steam Cloud automatically transfer Xbox saves?
No. That needs a specific supported cross-progression feature for the game.
Will another game key repair my save?
No. Game ownership and saved progress are separate issues.
