Where do I enter a Steam key?

In the Steam desktop client, open Games and choose Activate a Product on Steam.

Can a Steam key be moved to another account?

No. A successfully redeemed key is permanently attached to the account used for activation.

A Steam key is redeemed inside Valve’s official desktop client. Before entering it, compare the game, edition, platform and region shown on your order with the product page. A code cannot turn a DLC into the base game or change a region-restricted offer.

Checks before opening Steam

Sign in to the Steam account that should permanently own the game. Confirm that the offer is a key rather than an account or gift, copy the code without spaces, and check whether a base game is required. Keep the order page available until the activation succeeds.

Activate the code in the Steam client

Install or open the official Steam desktop client and sign in.
Open Games, choose Activate a Product on Steam, then accept the subscriber agreement.
Paste the complete product code exactly once and confirm the detected title.
If Steam shows the expected game and edition, complete activation and open Library.
Download only after the title appears in the correct account library.

Verify the result before closing the order

Open the title in Library and verify its edition, DLC list and supported operating system. Activation proves ownership; it does not guarantee that an unsupported computer can run the game. Save the order reference if installation will happen later.

Common Steam activation errors

Duplicate product code means Steam considers the code already used; check all accounts before contacting support.
Not available for purchase in your country usually indicates a region mismatch.
Requires ownership of another product means the code is DLC or an upgrade.
An invalid code can come from a missing character; copy it again before opening a support request.

Protect your account and proof of purchase
