Office 2024 or Microsoft 365: one-time purchase or subscription?

Office 2024 and Microsoft 365 are different purchase models. Office 2024 is a one-time purchase for the version and terms acquired; Microsoft 365 is a subscription with plan-dependent applications and services. Choose around your devices, essential software and cloud requirements—not just the first month’s price.

Check your existing entitlement

In Word or Excel on Windows, open File > Account to identify the product and account. Check Microsoft account subscriptions and any school or employer entitlement. A preinstalled application may be a trial. Conversely, a sign-in prompt may indicate the wrong account, not the need to buy another licence. Establish what you already have before comparing offers.

Compare equivalent requirements

1. List necessary applications. Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook are not automatically included in every offer carrying an Office or Microsoft 365 name.
2. Count users and devices, then read the exact licence limits. A one-time Office purchase for one PC or Mac does not cover an entire household.

5. For Office 2024, check edition and operating-system compatibility. The purchase does not automatically include the next major Office version.
6. Compare cost over your intended use period using the stated renewal price, and retain the terms before paying.

Match the model to the person

One person on one computer needing the applications in a particular Office 2024 edition may prefer a one-time purchase. Someone using several devices and the services included in a Microsoft 365 plan may prefer that subscription. An occasional user editing simple documents should assess free web applications first. These are decision examples, not a substitute for offer terms or checking compatibility with your own files.

Claims worth questioning

• “Lifetime” does not mean every future version, unlimited support or unlimited devices.
• Office LTSC and volume products should not be presented as interchangeable with consumer retail licences.
• An account supplied by a third party is not the same as an entitlement associated with your own account.
• Cloud, storage and AI benefits can vary by plan, location and owner; a logo alone does not confirm them.

Protect the documents as well as the licence

Keep local copies of important work and identify where documents are stored before changing subscriptions. An office licence is not a backup service by itself. Use and secure your own Microsoft account, retain the invoice and never send a seller your password to “install the licence”. Account access and a clear purchase record are useful when reinstalling later.
