Steam Families: sharing games without sharing passwords

Steam Families lets an eligible household of up to six close family members share supported games while keeping separate accounts. It does not make every title shareable, and simultaneous players of the same title need enough available copies. Do not confuse this feature with sharing a password or purchasing access to a stranger’s account.

Start with the evening you want to organise

List who will play, which game each person wants, and whether you want to play at the same time. This simple check avoids buying the wrong product. If two people want to join the same multiplayer session, check both the family-copy availability and the game’s own multiplayer requirements. Sharing access and supporting multiplayer are different questions.

Create a Steam Family and invite a household member

1. Use separate personal accounts rather than sharing the game owner’s password.
2. From Account Details in the Steam store, open Family Management, choose Create a Family and name it.
3. Select Invite a Member and find the correct account. Verify identity rather than relying on a similar display name.
4. Choose the appropriate Adult or Child role. Adults can manage invitations and restrictions; the role has real permissions.
5. The recipient accepts through their own account. If household eligibility or a cooldown blocks joining, do not exchange sign-ins to bypass it.
6. Inspect a shareable game in the library and test one title before assuming every game and add-on is available.

A practical example before buying another copy

Imagine two siblings who want to play the same cooperative game tonight. First check whether the game is eligible and whether a copy is already available for each intended player. Then confirm the edition and necessary add-ons. If a purchase is needed, compare a licence for your own account with any other delivered format; the cover picture alone does not describe what you receive.

If a game or invitation is unavailable

• Record whether the issue concerns joining the family, seeing a title or launching an occupied copy.
• Check the exact game rather than testing unrelated titles and drawing a general conclusion.
• Do not repeatedly leave and recreate the family to experiment: eligibility and waiting periods can apply.
• Keep the on-screen error for Steam Support, with private account information hidden.

Trusted household members, not shared credentials

Agree who can approve requests and what children may access. Never publish an invitation or send Steam Guard codes to a seller. If somebody asks for a login to enable “family sharing”, stop and use Steam’s own controls. Set and verify parental controls

1. An adult opens Family Management > Manage and expands the child’s entry.
2. Enable parental controls and configure game access, Steam features and playtime limits.
3. Check the outcome using the child’s own account.
4. Explain how to request access or extra time rather than handing over the adult account.

Do two players need another copy?

Check which copy is in use and whether the title supports sharing. Seeing a game in the family library does not create unlimited copies. If simultaneous use needs an additional copy, compare the same game and appropriate edition, not a cheaper add-on.

Before leaving a family, inspect the displayed cooldown and coordinate with its members. Recreating a group to fix one missing game can create a longer restriction. Keep purchases and accounts controlled by their owners.
