Start with a storage inventory before buying another drive. USB extended storage can hold PS5 game files but cannot run PS5 games directly. A supported internal M.2 SSD can hold playable PS5 games. Neither should be mistaken for a complete backup of saved progress.
Identify what uses the space
Open Settings > Storage and compare games, applications and captures. Look for two installed editions of the same title. Decide what you actually play now and what can wait. When redownloading takes a long time, keeping files on suitable storage may be more useful than deleting everything. This is a technical guide, not a claim that TuniGamers sells the hardware described.
Make space with fewer risks
- In Settings > Storage, select the relevant location and Games and Apps. Identify large installations and their editions.
- Before deleting, confirm the owning account and redownload entitlement. Keep any game disc still required.
- Delete only installations you no longer need. Do not choose saved data to solve ordinary installation-space pressure.
- To move to configured storage, highlight a game in the library, open Options and select Move Games and Apps.
- Choose a destination suitable for the title and wait for completion. Do not disconnect the drive during copying.
- Check free space, start a retained title and separately verify your saved progress.
Understand the purchase-changing distinction
USB extended storage can run compatible PS4 games and store PS5 files. Copy a PS5 title back to console storage or suitable M.2 storage before playing. An internal M.2 must satisfy Sony’s interface, dimensions and cooling requirements; “SSD” on its box is not enough. Compare the manufacturer’s exact model against the current official requirements before paying.
Common misunderstandings
- A USB SSD remains USB storage; it does not gain internal M.2 game-launch capabilities.
- Formatting erases the selected drive’s existing data.
- PS5 saved data is not managed like ordinary game folders on USB extended storage.
- A recognised drive does not grant a missing game licence or renew a subscription.
Prepare new USB storage carefully
Back up everything already on the drive elsewhere. Check Sony’s requirements, connect to a compatible port, then use Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage > Format as USB Extended Storage. Verify the drive identity before confirming erasure. To disconnect while the console is on, use Safely Remove in the same storage area.
Internal M.2 installation needs model-specific instructions
Physical installation depends on the PS5 model and SSD. Update the console, fully switch it off, unplug it and follow Sony’s illustrations for that model. Do not improvise cover removal, spacer placement or cooling. Ask a competent person if unsure. The official source below provides dimensions and the procedure to verify at installation time.
After the console recognises and prepares the M.2, choose installation location in storage settings and move one game as a test. A limited check is preferable to transferring the entire library immediately.
Plan your next download
Check the selected edition’s space needs and allow room for updates. Do not erase saves to fit a new game. Also verify PS4 versus PS5, full game versus DLC and region conditions: a suitable drive cannot fix those incompatibilities.
Check PlayStation game requirements and the compatibility guides before expanding your library.
Frequently asked questions
Can PS5 games run from a USB SSD?
No. Copy PS5 game files to supported playable storage first.
Will any M.2 SSD work?
No. Verify interface, dimensions, cooling and current Sony requirements.
Does formatting preserve my files?
No. It erases the selected drive, so back up existing data first.
