Genuine Windows: how to check a licence before buying

Genuine Windows means Microsoft-published software used with an appropriate licence. A product key that activates is not, by itself, proof of lawful provenance or the rights a seller promises. The useful buying question is not simply “Will this remove the watermark?” It is “What entitlement am I receiving, for which device, and what evidence can I retain?”

First check whether you already own what you need

A computer sold with Windows may already have a digital licence. Reinstalling the same edition on that computer does not automatically require another purchase. A newly assembled PC sold without Windows is a different situation. Office appearing on the desktop is not evidence that a Windows licence includes Office. Separate these questions before comparing prices.

A practical pre-purchase inspection

1. Open Settings > System > About and write down the precise edition. Home and Pro are different entitlements; “full Windows” is not a useful specification.
2. Open Settings > System > Activation. Record the status privately. If it is already activated, identify why you need another licence: a new device, an edition change or an actual licensing problem.
3. Find your PC invoice, software receipt and associated Microsoft account. Ask the administrator before changing a work or school computer’s managed activation.
4. Read the offer for version, edition, device count, delivery format and transfer conditions. Request clarification when a field is missing rather than assuming the broadest rights.
5. For an older computer, use Microsoft’s Windows 11 compatibility check. A key cannot make an unsupported processor, TPM or firmware meet the requirements.
6. Keep the listing and invoice, then obtain installation files from Microsoft. Do not install an unknown “activator” as part of the purchase.

Understand the licence category

Preinstalled OEM licensing is generally associated with the original device. Retail transfer rights depend on the applicable terms and do not mean unlimited simultaneous installations. Volume licensing belongs to organisational agreements: a screenshot saying Pro or Enterprise does not establish a personal resale entitlement. Business buyers should also check their invoicing and audit requirements. Ask for the actual terms instead of treating the licence label as a guarantee.

Reasons to stop before paying

• You are asked to disable antivirus protection or run a bypass script.
• The offer omits device count, edition or usage conditions.
• Successful activation is presented as the only proof of authenticity.
• The delivery consists of someone else’s Microsoft account rather than a clearly explained entitlement.

What a legitimate licence does—and does not—solve

Clear licensing helps with reinstalls, support and business compliance, and avoids dependence on untrusted activation utilities. It does not replace updates or backups. It is also inaccurate to say every non-genuine installation receives no security updates: Microsoft says critical security updates may still be delivered. Licence compliance and device security are related but separate checks.

Three buying decisions in practice

An activated Home laptop needing a clean installation: back up files and investigate same-edition reactivation first. A new unlicensed build: compare an entitlement matching its use. A motherboard replacement followed by an activation error: check the troubleshooter and your licence rights before buying again.
